2-5 pelaajaa sukeltavat keskiaikaan super suositussa Carcassone-pelissä, joka on saanut esimerkiksi vuoden 2004 perhepeli -palkinnon. Peliä pelataan laatoilla, joita yhdistellään pelialueeksi. Carcassonessa tarkoituksena on rakentaa keskiaikaista kaupunkia pelto-, kaupunki- ja luostarilaatoilla sekä asettaa niihin itselleen seuraajia.

Pelissä liikutaan laudalla ja nostetaan kortteja kategorioista: mielenterveys, tehtävä, itsetuntemus ja luovuus (sekä tuhmat-kortit). Voittamisella ei ole niinkään merkitystä vaan tarkoitus on pitää hauskaa yhdessä sekä oppia uutta muista.

Nykyään lautapeleiksi kutsutaan myös pelejä, joissa ei tarvita pelilautaa vaan pelaaminen tapahtuu esimerkiksi merkeillä tai korteilla. Tosin edelleen julkaistaan moderneja versioita laudallisista peleistä, joissa edetään pelinappuloilla laudan reittejä pitkin.
